Nero X Prioritizes Music Quality Over Awards: “The Recognition Will Come”

Ghanaian singer Nero X has made it clear that he isn’t losing any sleep over awards. Despite being in the music industry for over a decade, the Osey hitmaker remains focused on what he deems most important—creating great music for his fans. While many artists measure their success by the number of accolades they collect, Nero X believes that if he continues to put out high-quality work, the recognition will naturally follow at the right time.

Joseph Nkrumah Buabeng, known by his stage name Nero X, has built a solid reputation both locally and internationally, but major awards from top schemes, such as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), have yet to come his way. However, this hasn’t phased him. The seasoned artist, who has received some awards in his career, is not overly concerned about the absence of major honours. For him, the most significant part of his journey is the music itself, and that’s where his attention remains.

In an exclusive interview with Graphic Showbiz on March 29, Nero X shared his thoughts on the issue. He acknowledged the role that awards can play in propelling an artist’s career, but he emphasized that recognition isn’t what drives him. “Awards can definitely be impactful, and they do help artists grow in their careers, but for me, what matters most is the quality of the music I produce. I want to create music that will last, music that people will love and remember,” Nero X explained.

While many in the industry might define success based on the number of trophies on their shelves, Nero X is more concerned with the impact of his work. He mentioned that although he has been nominated for awards at various prestigious events like TGMA, he has yet to win top prizes from them. Despite this, he says he is undeterred. “I’ve received a few awards, both in Ghana and abroad, but I haven’t won major awards from TGMA yet, though I’ve had nominations. That’s not something that bothers me. What matters to me is the work I put in for my fans. If I keep working hard, the awards will come when the time is right,” he added.

The singer’s laid-back attitude toward awards is indicative of his long-term vision for his career. Nero X’s perspective shows a level of maturity and patience that many young artists may not always exhibit. In an industry often driven by the pursuit of fame and recognition, Nero X’s refusal to be defined by the number of awards he wins speaks to his commitment to his craft and his fans.

In addition to his focus on music, Nero X took the opportunity to comment on the current state of Ghana’s creative industry, particularly in light of recent policy changes. He expressed optimism about the direction the industry is heading, especially with the support of government policies aimed at bolstering the creative sector. “I’m really happy with the way the creative industry is progressing. The government has been in office for only a short time, but I can already see the positive steps they are taking. I’m hopeful that as more policies are put in place, we’ll be able to take our creative works to the global stage with confidence,” he said.

Turning to his recent music release, Nero X unveiled his latest single Low Key on March 29, 2025. The song holds a special place in his heart, as it reflects his personal experiences over the years in the music industry. According to the artist, Low Key is not just a track; it’s an expression of gratitude and motivation for his fans. “This song is about my journey in music. It’s a personal reflection, and I want to thank everyone who has supported me from the beginning,” he explained.

The track also serves as a reminder for his listeners to keep pushing forward in life, regardless of the challenges they face. “I want my fans to stay motivated and never give up on their dreams. Life can be tough, but if you keep working hard, success will follow. Low Key is also a message to my fans that I’m still here, still creating, and still keeping things ‘Low Key,’” he shared.

For Nero X, success is not just about winning awards but about creating music that resonates with people. His approach to his career—rooted in hard work, gratitude, and humility—sets him apart in an industry often obsessed with immediate recognition. As he continues to focus on making great music and inspiring his fans, Nero X is confident that the recognition and accolades will come when the time is right.
