Ghana’s young academic talents have once again showcased their brilliance on the global stage by securing 17 prestigious trophies at the 2024 UCMAS International Competition in India. This incredible achievement marks a significant improvement from the four trophies won in 2023, representing a remarkable 325% increase in the nation’s performance.

The competition, which took place in India, challenged students to solve 200 arithmetic questions within an eight-minute timeframe. This fast-paced test was designed to assess not only mathematical skills but also visual memory, concentration, and the overall academic aptitude of the participants. The format pushed students to their limits, requiring them to perform under intense pressure.

Ghana was represented by a 28-member contingent, who demonstrated exceptional skills in mental arithmetic and abacus techniques. The group competed against over 6,000 students from 30 different countries across four categories: A1, A2, B, and D. Despite the fierce competition, Ghana’s team emerged as standouts, bringing home three championship trophies, six first runners-up trophies, and nine second runners-up trophies. This achievement was celebrated by enthusiastic cheers from the Ghanaian supporters who gathered at the awards ceremony, reflecting the immense pride and joy felt by the entire nation.

The 31st edition of the UCMAS competition attracted young minds from all over the world, each displaying impressive mental agility. However, it was the Ghanaian students who captured the spotlight, solidifying their place as a rising force in the field of mental arithmetic. This victory was not just the result of natural talent, but the culmination of months of intense preparation, unwavering commitment, and a determination to succeed. Even during their two-day journey to India, the students remained focused, using the time to practice their mental math skills and refine their techniques.

A key figure in Ghana’s success was Roger Ohemeng, the Director for Business Development at Maurya Education Limited, who was honored with a special plaque for his dedication to advancing the UCMAS program in Ghana. His tireless efforts in promoting the initiative and supporting the students were acknowledged during the ceremony. Mr. Ohemeng expressed his appreciation to the technical team, emphasizing that this victory was a direct result of their hard work and dedication in preparing the students for the global competition.

In an interview with Joy Prime at the awards ceremony, Mr. Ohemeng shared his pride in the students’ achievement, saying, “This victory is a demonstration of what can be achieved with hard work, commitment, and faith in our young talents. These students have shown the world that Ghana’s brilliance knows no bounds.” His words reflect the essence of this accomplishment — that with the right guidance, determination, and hard work, Ghanaian students can excel in any field.
