Division One side Golden Kick stunned Hearts of Oak by securing a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory to progress to the MTN FA Cup quarterfinals. The match, held at Legon Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon, ended 0-0 after regulation time, setting the stage for a tense shootout.

Hearts of Oak, returning to competitive action after a 22-day break following the tragic death of a fan, Nana Pooley, struggled to regain their sharpness and rhythm. Their lack of match fitness was evident, as they found it difficult to break down Golden Kick, who displayed a disciplined and organized defense throughout the match.

Despite not posing much of an attacking threat, Golden Kick held their ground during the 90 minutes, forcing the game into a penalty shootout. The shootout itself began with a setback for Golden Kick, who missed their opening penalty. However, they responded with calm composure, converting four consecutive penalties. Hearts of Oak, under pressure, failed to capitalize on two key opportunities and missed their own attempts, which ultimately led to their elimination.

Adding to their woes, Hearts of Oak were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Theophilus Collison was shown a red card in the second half, further hindering their chances.

Golden Kick’s victory is one of the biggest surprises of this year’s MTN FA Cup, and their performance in the shootout saw them advance to the quarterfinals, while Hearts of Oak will have to reflect on their disappointing exit from the competition.
