GTPCWU Urges President Mahama to Address Vandalism in the Petroleum and Energy Sector

The General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has called on President John Mahama to take immediate action against individuals involved in the vandalism and destruction of state property, particularly within the petroleum and energy sector. The union expressed deep concern over the increasing attacks on key institutions, which are vital to the country’s energy infrastructure.
At a press conference yesterday, Bernard Owusu, the national chairman of GTPCWU, highlighted the serious risks of exploitation and mismanagement in the sector. He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced transparency and accountability to ensure that the industry operates efficiently and with integrity. The union has voiced its readiness to cooperate with the President’s office by submitting all relevant documentation that outlines key issues, incidents, and their requests for action.
One of the specific concerns raised by GTPCWU involved attacks on staff members of important institutions, such as the Power Authority and Ghana Gas. These attacks, according to the union, were unprovoked and resulted in harm to innocent workers, raising questions about the security of employees and assets within the sector.
In light of these events, the union stressed the importance of maintaining strong democratic principles and fostering unity within the workforce. GTPCWU reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency and ensuring that all activities within the sector are conducted fairly and without corruption. The union’s leaders called on President Mahama to act decisively in addressing the issue of vandalism and to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly, to prevent further damage to state property and ensure the safety of all those working in the sector.
