Kotoko and Hearts of Oak Call for Enhanced Security Following Fan’s Tragic Death

Ghanaian football powerhouses Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have come together to advocate for stronger security at league venues following the tragic incident at the Nana Koromansah II Stadium in Nsoatre.
The two clubs have revealed plans to submit a joint position paper to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), urging the implementation of stricter security measures across the Ghana Premier League.
This action comes in response to the violent scenes during Kotoko’s match against Nsoatreman on matchday 19, which led to the tragic death of a devoted fan, Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley. Following the incident, the Ghana Police took over the investigation, and at least five individuals were arrested in connection to the violence.
In a meeting between the management teams of both clubs, Kotoko and Hearts reaffirmed their commitment to addressing security concerns at match venues and ensuring the safety of all fans.
“The two esteemed teams have underscored their unified dedication to tackling the pressing issue of security at match venues across the league. This announcement comes ahead of their scheduled engagement with the Executive Committee of the GFA on Thursday, 6th February 2025,” read their joint statement.
Both clubs described Nana Pooley’s death as a painful reminder of the urgent need for enhanced security measures at football matches. The Hearts of Oak board also extended their condolences to Kotoko and pledged their full support in efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
“Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are calling for the adoption of improved security protocols and other preventative measures. They are eager to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders, including the Government, the GFA, law enforcement agencies, and dedicated supporters. Their collective goal is to ensure that football remains a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved,” the statement added.
The clubs are urging the GFA to take swift action on the recommendations in their position paper ahead of the scheduled meeting with all Premier League clubs on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
