Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for all national stakeholders, particularly the Electoral Commission (EC), to ensure that Ghana’s democratic process remains peaceful and intact ahead of the December 7, 2024 elections. In a statement released on December 3, 2024, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe urged key figures in the country to take responsibility and act in ways that will guarantee the stability, fairness, and transparency of the election process. His message was addressed to both political leaders and Ghana’s citizens, encouraging everyone to prioritize the nation’s democratic integrity above partisan interests.

In his message to Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized the EC’s crucial role in safeguarding the election’s credibility. He underscored the importance of ensuring that the election process is carried out with integrity, fairness, and impartiality, reminding her of the EC’s legacy in promoting transparent and credible elections. He stated, “You are not the first to hold this esteemed office, and you will not be the last. The legacy of this institution has always been one of fairness, transparency, and impartiality.” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s comments reflect the critical role the EC plays in maintaining the public’s trust in the electoral system, especially in a politically charged environment.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to demonstrate a similar commitment to ensuring fairness and peace throughout the election process. He urged the president to continue the work done in the successful elections of 2016 and 2020, highlighting the importance of upholding the high standards that had been set. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe appealed to President Akufo-Addo to ensure that the EC and all other relevant state institutions operate transparently and fairly, further reinforcing the public’s confidence in the electoral system.

Beyond the political leadership, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also made a strong appeal to the clergy, traditional leaders, and members of the Council of State. He urged these influential figures to move beyond their usual silence during times of national challenges and to use their platforms to advocate for peace, accountability, and national unity. He emphasized that their voices were needed to maintain social harmony and prevent the polarization of the country, urging them to refrain from aligning with any political factions that might undermine the spirit of peace and national progress.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stressed that the responsibility for maintaining peace and stability was not limited to political leaders alone but also extended to every citizen of Ghana. He urged the Ghanaian people to stay vigilant as the election draws nearer, reminding them not to let partisan loyalties cloud their judgment in the face of potential electoral challenges. He further highlighted that this was a time for Ghanaians to come together and prioritize the future of their country over individual political allegiances. He called on all Ghanaians to demand peace, fairness, and accountability from all the institutions involved in the electoral process, as it was crucial for the continued success of the country’s democracy.

“To my fellow Ghanaians, I urge you to stay vigilant. Let us not allow partisan loyalties to blind us to the dangers we face. This is a time to prioritize the future of Ghana above all else,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said in his statement. He urged the public to come together and hold all parties accountable to ensure a fair and peaceful election that would enhance the country’s democratic credentials.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s message is a reminder of the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in the country—government officials, electoral bodies, religious and traditional leaders, and citizens alike—to ensure that Ghana’s democracy remains strong and stable. His call for vigilance, peace, fairness, and accountability serves as a crucial reminder in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, as the country seeks to uphold its proud democratic legacy. By staying united and focused on the future of the nation, Ghana can continue to demonstrate the strength and resilience of its democracy to the rest of the world.
