The official dissolution of the 8th Parliament of Ghana’s 4th Republic will take place on Monday, January 6, 2025, marking the conclusion of the current legislative term. Following the dissolution, the newly elected members of the 9th Parliament will convene at 11:00 PM to elect a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers. This process will pave the way for the transition of power and leadership in the country’s legislative body. The committee responsible for overseeing the dissolution and inauguration of the 9th Parliament has assured that the transition will be smooth, peaceful, and in line with the country’s democratic standards.

In a recent media briefing, Camillo Pwamang, the Deputy Coordinator for the Dissolution and Inauguration Committee and Deputy Clerk of Parliament, stressed the importance of maintaining Ghana’s democratic foundation. He emphasized that this transition is another significant step in the country’s proud democratic tradition, and the committee is fully committed to ensuring that the process is conducted with the utmost regard for the constitution and established procedures. “This forthcoming transition is yet another milestone in this proud tradition, and we are determined to shepherd it seamlessly and with the highest regard for constitutional and procedural propriety,” Pwamang stated.

Pwamang further highlighted the responsibility placed upon all stakeholders during this time. He described the transition period as one that should be characterized by solemnity and collaboration. The committee is focused on ensuring that the process is administratively efficient while also emphasizing inclusivity, transparency, and national unity. “This is a time to further strengthen the foundations of our democracy, enhance the integrity of our legislative processes, and renew our dedication to the service of every Ghanaian citizen by making parliament and its processes more open to the public,” Pwamang added.

Gifty Twum Ampofo, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, also spoke on the preparations for the transition. She discussed the critical role of the election of the Speaker of Parliament, which is scheduled for January 6, 2025. This election will set the tone for the leadership of the 9th Parliament and will be a defining moment for the country’s governance. Ampofo assured that the Planning Committee is collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the election is fair, transparent, and free from any irregularities. “The election of the Speaker of Parliament, scheduled for January 6, 2025, is a pivotal moment as it will set the tone for legislative leadership in the upcoming term. We are actively collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure this process is conducted fairly and transparently,” she explained.

Looking beyond the legislative transition, the presidential inauguration will take place on January 7, 2025, marking the official beginning of the new government’s term. This event will not only signify the start of a new chapter in Ghana’s governance but will also serve as a celebration of the country’s enduring commitment to democratic values. Both the parliamentary and presidential events are set to showcase Ghana’s democratic maturity and leadership transition. The Planning Committee has encouraged all Ghanaians to partake in the presidential inauguration, viewing it as a historic occasion to reaffirm the nation’s democratic spirit and unity.

Ghana’s transition to the 9th Parliament is poised to be a momentous occasion for the country. With both the election of the Speaker and the presidential inauguration on the horizon, the committee in charge of the transition is working diligently to ensure that everything proceeds smoothly. The emphasis is on transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration, all of which are integral to preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
