Police report that approximately 10 individuals were killed in a school campus shooting in Sweden.

Around 10 people have been reported dead following a shooting at an educational facility in central Sweden, including the suspected gunman.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the attack at Risbergska School in Örebro, located 200 km (124 miles) west of Stockholm, the “most devastating mass shooting” in Sweden’s history.
Authorities believe the male shooter is among the fatalities and have confirmed he was not previously known to them. While the motive remains unclear, they suspect he acted alone.
Kristersson expressed disbelief over the scale of the tragedy, stating that it was difficult to process.Earlier, the police had warned that the death toll could rise as several people were seriously injured. At least four individuals are reported to be undergoing surgery, with many others transported to hospitals.
Initially, law enforcement had reported five shooting victims, and the incident was classified as an attempted murder investigation, with arson and aggravated weapons charges. However, later updates indicated that the death toll had reached “around 10,” though the exact number was still uncertain. Authorities also ruled out terrorism as a motive.
The shooting occurred at 12:33 local time (11:44 GMT) at Risbergska, an adult education center on a campus shared with other schools. These centers primarily serve individuals who have not completed their primary or secondary education. Nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Orebro’s police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, urged the public to avoid the area for safety.Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer, alongside the Prime Minister, extended his condolences and reassured citizens that schools would remain safe for attendance the following day.
“This is the worst school shooting I have ever witnessed,” said StrommerHospitals in the area cleared their emergency rooms to accommodate victims. Orebro University Hospital reported treating five gunshot wounds, with a sixth person receiving treatment for minor injuries. No children were among the injured.
Teacher Lena Warenmark, who was on-site, recalled hearing multiple gunshots from near her classroom.Ali el Mokad, whose relative was believed to be at the school, waited outside a hospital for news. “It feels awful,” he said, describing how his cousin’s friend witnessed the chaos and saw people on the ground, bleeding.
One student, identified only as Marwa, described the scene as chaotic. She and others tried to help an injured man by applying pressure to his shoulder wound to stop the bleeding, though many were in shock.
Prime Minister Kristersson expressed his sorrow over the “painful day,” emphasizing the nightmare of being trapped in a classroom fearing for one’s life.
He urged the public to allow police space to investigate while assuring that there were no further threats to schools. Further updates will be provided by authorities in the coming days.
