As President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo approaches the end of his second term, he expressed confidence that his legacy will be positively assessed by history. Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2024, the outgoing president took the opportunity to reflect on his administration’s achievements and reaffirm his belief in the lasting impact of his policies on Ghana’s development.

While acknowledging that his party’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was unsuccessful in the 2024 general elections, President Akufo-Addo stood firm in his view that his government had accomplished significant progress in several key sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, and industry. He expressed pride in the work his administration had done under God’s guidance and with the support of the Ghanaian people.

“I speak to you today, proud of what my government has achieved through transformative policies,” said President Akufo-Addo. He pointed out the various social interventions his administration had implemented, particularly in health, education, and energy, noting that these measures had greatly improved the quality of life for Ghanaians across the country. The President also highlighted how his government had focused on good governance, economic development, and creating a more inclusive and resilient economy.

Despite the challenges faced by his administration, Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that history would judge the Akufo-Addo government’s performance favorably. “I’m confident, in all humility, that prosperity will judge our efforts well. Future generations will look back on this period and recognize that we laid a solid foundation for the country’s progress,” he said, reflecting on the enduring impact of his policies.

The President also took time to acknowledge the contributions of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, which is celebrating its bicentennial anniversary this year. Akufo-Addo lauded the church for its pivotal role in shaping the country’s development over the past two centuries. He highlighted the church’s contributions to education, healthcare, and moral guidance, noting that the positive effects of the church’s work could be seen in both the academic institutions it founded and the hospitals it established. Additionally, the President emphasized how the church had played a vital role in shaping the moral fabric of the nation.

“The impact of the gospel is evident not just in schools and hospitals but in the moral fiber of our people,” he said, underscoring the importance of the church’s influence on Ghanaian society. The President also remarked on the personal role the Presbyterian Church had played throughout his presidency. He expressed deep gratitude for the church’s prayers, support, and encouragement, which he credited for helping him navigate the challenging moments of his tenure.

“Throughout my time in office, the Presbyterian Church has been a steadfast partner, praying for me, offering wisdom, and supporting my government’s vision for national transformation,” he noted. The President acknowledged that the church’s faith and prayers had played a crucial role in giving him the strength to continue pursuing the goals of his administration, even in the most difficult times.

Looking back on his time in office, Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of the relationships and partnerships that had been built during his presidency. He expressed confidence that his administration had succeeded in creating a foundation for future growth and prosperity, one that would benefit the generations to come. The President’s reflections were a clear reminder of his pride in the transformative policies he had championed, from infrastructure development to education reforms, and his continued belief in the power of collaboration with key institutions like the Presbyterian Church.

As he prepares to leave office on January 7, 2025, Akufo-Addo’s remarks highlight his firm belief that his government’s legacy will be viewed favorably, with future generations recognizing the strides made during his time in power. Despite the political setbacks of the 2024 election, his optimism about the long-term impact of his policies and the partnerships he cultivated remains strong.
