Puma Energy Ghana, a leading energy solutions provider, is actively reinforcing its commitment to road safety by promoting safe driving practices through collaborative educational initiatives. The company recently hosted the seventh edition of its Transporters Safety Quiz, an event that serves as a key platform to raise awareness about road safety and encourage safe driving among transporters. This quiz not only educates but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among participants, all while honoring the efforts of those who prioritize road safety in their operations.

According to the Ghana National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the country has seen an alarming increase in road traffic accidents. Data from January to July 2024 reveals that there were a total of 7,470 road traffic incidents involving 12,678 vehicles, including private cars, commercial vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, and tricycles. These incidents resulted in 9,965 casualties, including 1,405 fatalities and 8,560 injuries. Shockingly, this represents a 13 percent increase in road fatalities compared to the same period in 2023. These statistics highlight the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, making initiatives such as Puma Energy Ghana’s Transporters Safety Quiz even more critical.

The Transporters Safety Quiz provides a platform for transporters to engage with each other and learn more about road safety best practices. It also serves as a space for recognition, where drivers who demonstrate exemplary safety standards are celebrated. The quiz encourages participants to adopt safe driving habits and underscores the importance of working together to create a culture of safety on the roads. The 2024 edition attracted representatives from Puma Energy Ghana’s contracted transporters, including RIET Transport, J.K. Ahiadome Transport, and J.K. Horgle Transport, all of whom demonstrated their dedication to road safety through their active participation.

The quiz consisted of a dynamic four-round session, expertly moderated by renowned national quiz master Dan Afari Yeboah. During the event, transporter representatives displayed an exceptional understanding of road safety practices, impressing their peers and guests alike. RIET Transport emerged victorious, successfully defending their title as champions of the Transporters Safety Quiz, a title they had earned in 2023. In recognition of their outstanding achievement, they were awarded a cheque, a certificate, and a commemorative plaque. Other drivers who showed remarkable commitment to safe driving were also acknowledged, further emphasizing the importance of responsible road use.

The 2024 edition of the Transporters Safety Quiz drew significant attention from various stakeholders. In addition to transporters, representatives from organizations such as the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), the National Road Safety Authority, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Association of Oil Marketing Companies, and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) attended the event. This wide representation from the oil and gas sector, as well as road safety authorities, reflects the broad support for the initiative and its focus on improving road safety across the country.

Puma Energy Ghana believes that fostering a culture of road safety requires collaboration with all relevant stakeholders. As part of its ongoing efforts to promote safe driving, the company has implemented the Intelligent Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) across its operations. This system plays a crucial role in enhancing driver safety by monitoring key parameters such as speed, driving behavior, and the frequency of nighttime driving. The IVMS helps drivers mitigate risky behaviors such as speeding and encourages adherence to industry regulations and safety standards. Furthermore, it tracks critical data, enabling Puma Energy Ghana to address potential compliance issues promptly and ensure responsible driving behavior among operators.

Mr. Samba Diop, the General Manager of Puma Energy Ghana, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to road safety. He stated, “At Puma Energy, safety is at the heart of everything we do. It’s not just a priority; it’s an integral part of our business operations. We are dedicated to safeguarding the health and well-being of our employees, stakeholders, and partners. The Transporters Quiz is an annual event that highlights the importance of knowledge-sharing and continuous learning when it comes to advancing road safety. We are committed to working closely with our employees, contractors, and other stakeholders to create a safer road environment for all.”

Through initiatives like the Transporters Safety Quiz and the implementation of advanced technologies like the IVMS, Puma Energy Ghana continues to lead the way in promoting road safety in the country. The company recognizes that ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility that requires the participation of everyone, from transporters to road safety authorities. Puma Energy Ghana remains dedicated to creating a safer driving environment by fostering collaboration, encouraging safe driving behaviors, and leveraging technology to support its mission of reducing road accidents and fatalities.
