Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has been trending on social media as Ghanaians, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), engage in debates comparing his wealth to that of Ghanaian musicians.

The discussion centers around whether Ghanaian musicians are wealthier than footballers. One user sparked the conversation by challenging others to name a Ghanaian musician wealthier than Gyan, who is regarded as one of the richest footballers in Africa.

In a past interview, Gyan shared how he built his wealth through his football career. He explained that his journey started with a modest salary of €3,700 a month at Udinese, after initially earning GH₵100 a month at Liberty. He went on to earn €7,000 at Modena, and his salary rose further after returning to Udinese post-2006 World Cup.

However, Gyan credited his move to Al Ain in the UAE for changing his financial situation drastically. “I enjoyed playing at Al Ain. I stayed for four seasons, and it changed my life financially forever,” he stated. Gyan was the highest-paid African footballer during his time in the UAE, and his fortune skyrocketed again when he joined Shanghai Shenhua in 2015, earning £225,000 per week.
