Blay Nyamekye Armah, Sekondi’s newly elected Member of Parliament (MP), has swiftly launched an initiative aimed at restoring streetlights across the constituency, marking a key step in fulfilling his campaign promises. This initiative, called the “Lighting the Streets” campaign, is part of Armah’s commitment to improving the safety and quality of life for residents, particularly in response to the long-standing issues of inadequate street lighting in key parts of Sekondi.

Having won a decisive victory over incumbent MP Andrew Mercer, Blay Armah’s first major project focuses on restoring streetlights in the constituency, a move that has been widely welcomed by the local community. This campaign is driven by concerns that many parts of Sekondi, including high-traffic areas like European Town, Anafo, and the critical stretch linking Bakado to Nkotompo, have been poorly lit for years, creating safety risks for residents, drivers, and pedestrians. These areas were notoriously dark, especially at night, and posed a danger to the public, with the lack of streetlights making it difficult for vehicles to navigate and pedestrians to walk safely.

The issue of dark streets in Sekondi was highlighted earlier this year when TV3’s “Fixing the Streetlights” campaign showcased the dire situation, with several of the principal roads left in complete darkness. This lack of proper illumination raised alarm within the community, as the absence of streetlights led to security concerns and contributed to a declining nightlife in the area.

To address these issues, Blay Armah has launched a two-phase streetlight restoration plan. The first phase focuses on the European Town-to-Bakado route, where 80 streetlight bulbs are being installed. This road is a vital part of the constituency, and the installation of streetlights is expected to significantly improve safety and visibility, particularly during the night. The second phase of the project will expand the restoration to the stretch from Bakado to Nkotompo, further enhancing the lighting along one of the busiest parts of Sekondi.

The restoration project has been met with overwhelming support from residents, who have expressed their relief and appreciation for the initiative. Commercial drivers, in particular, have welcomed the move, citing how unsafe it had been to drive in the dark due to the lack of streetlights. One commercial driver, Razak Karim, shared his gratitude, recalling a near-miss involving an eight-year-old child because of the absence of proper lighting. “This is a huge relief for us. It’s been unsafe driving in the dark, and this effort is a blessing,” Karim said, emphasizing the importance of safer roads in ensuring the community’s well-being.

The restoration of streetlights is expected to have multiple benefits for Sekondi. Beyond improving safety, the enhanced lighting is likely to have a positive impact on the local economy, particularly by revitalizing the evening economy. Business owners, especially those operating at night, are hopeful that the restored streetlights will encourage more people to engage in evening activities, boosting local commerce. Additionally, improved lighting will make Sekondi more attractive to visitors and residents alike, fostering a sense of security and making the area more welcoming.

Blay Armah’s prompt action to address these issues has generated a sense of hope and optimism among Sekondi residents. The project is seen as a positive first step in improving the overall quality of life in the constituency, and many are hopeful that this initiative will be followed by other important development projects. Residents are particularly encouraged by Armah’s commitment to fulfilling his promises and his focus on practical issues that directly affect their daily lives.

The “Lighting the Streets” initiative is not just about restoring lights; it is about revitalizing Sekondi and ensuring a safer, more vibrant community. Through this effort, Blay Armah is demonstrating his dedication to the well-being of his constituents and his willingness to take immediate action to address their concerns. As the restoration of streetlights continues, Sekondi is likely to see further improvements, both in terms of safety and the overall quality of life, signaling a brighter future for the constituency.
