The National Honours and Awards ceremony, held in Accra on December 30, 2024, celebrated the exceptional contributions of three prominent sports personalities who have significantly impacted the development of sports in Ghana. These individuals were honored for their dedication to uplifting the country’s sports scene and representing Ghana on the global stage.

Among the honorees was Herbert Amponsah Mensah, the current President of Rugby Africa, who received the prestigious Order of the Volta – Member award. This distinguished honor recognized Mensah’s tireless efforts in advancing rugby both in Ghana and across Africa. Mensah, the only sports figure to receive the Order of the Volta award, expressed his deep gratitude in a heartfelt Facebook post. In his message, he acknowledged that while he was the recipient of the award, it was a collective recognition for all those who have been part of his journey over the past 25 years. He specifically highlighted the progress made in Ghanaian rugby under his leadership, including the establishment of Rugby Park, which serves as a hub for the sport, and the successful hosting of the Rugby Africa Ladies 7s tournament, which expanded to include 12 teams during his tenure. Mensah dedicated the award to the broader sports community, noting that it was a collective effort that made such achievements possible. He emphasized that the recognition was not just for him but for all the stakeholders who had supported him in his mission to grow rugby in the country.

Another prominent figure honored at the ceremony was Albert K. Frimpong, the former President of Ghana Baseball and Softball. Frimpong was awarded the Grand Medal in recognition of his extensive contributions to sports development in Ghana. Known for his pioneering work in baseball and softball, Frimpong expressed his surprise and humility upon receiving the award. “Initially, I thought it was a prank,” he said, reflecting on the moment he was informed about the recognition. For Frimpong, who has dedicated more than three decades to promoting sports in Ghana, the award was a deeply fulfilling moment. In addition to his leadership in baseball, Frimpong has played a vital role in founding initiatives like Skate Soccer, a program designed for the physically challenged, and co-founding Beach Soccer in Ghana. He has also served as a board member of the Ghana Olympic Committee. Frimpong expressed that the recognition would motivate him to continue his work and inspire others to follow in his footsteps. He vowed to keep pushing Ghana’s name to greater heights through his ongoing contributions to sports development.

Ayishetu Adam, a former African Games relay medalist, was also honored with the Grand Medal for her remarkable achievements in athletics. Adam’s dedication to her sport and her impressive performances on the track have made her a role model for many aspiring athletes, particularly young women. Her success not only highlighted her personal accomplishments but also underscored the growing importance of female athletes in Ghana’s sporting landscape. Receiving the Grand Medal was a testament to her hard work and the significant impact she has had on the sports community in Ghana.

These awards were not just a reflection of the individual achievements of the honorees but also a recognition of their collective impact on the development of sports in Ghana. Their dedication to promoting sports, inspiring future generations, and fostering innovation within their respective fields has made them key figures in shaping the country’s sports culture. The awards ceremony was a celebration of their invaluable contributions and highlighted the critical roles they have played in boosting Ghana’s international sporting reputation.

As these sports icons continue to inspire and contribute to the growth of sports in Ghana, their legacies will undoubtedly motivate future generations to strive for excellence in their athletic pursuits. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of sports and the important role it plays in uniting communities, empowering individuals, and uplifting nations.
