University of Ghana Suspends Senior Lecturer for Sexual Harassment
The University of Ghana has suspended Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, for a period of two semesters due to allegations of sexual harassment. This disciplinary action follows an investigation into his conduct, which was found to violate the University’s policies regarding sexual harassment and misconduct.
According to a notice released on March 12, 2025, and signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Dr. Appiah was found to have acted contrary to “Section 1.1(A) of the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy” as well as “Section 10.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.” The sanctions imposed on him are part of a broader disciplinary action that also involved 16 students, each of whom was found guilty of various forms of misconduct.
As part of his suspension, Dr. Appiah is required to publicly apologize in writing to the individual who made the sexual harassment complaint. He is also prohibited from applying for promotion to a higher academic rank for a period of one year following the completion of his suspension. These measures are intended to reinforce the University’s commitment to addressing issues of sexual misconduct within its academic community.
In addition to the suspension and apology, Dr. Appiah is mandated to undergo training on sexual harassment and misconduct. The training will be conducted by the University’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee, which is responsible for promoting awareness and educating the University community on appropriate conduct and behavior. The University emphasized that such training is an essential part of ensuring that all members of the academic environment are fully aware of the rules surrounding sexual harassment and misconduct, and the consequences of violating these policies.
The disciplinary action taken against Dr. Appiah reflects the University of Ghana’s zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment. In its statement, the University reiterated its firm commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for both staff and students. The notice emphasized that sexual harassment is a serious offense that undermines the core values of the institution, and that those found guilty of such behavior will face appropriate consequences.
Furthermore, the University of Ghana has taken the opportunity to remind all members of its community — including faculty, staff, and students — of the importance of adhering to the institution’s code of conduct. The University stressed that it is vital for everyone to be familiar with and understand the sexual harassment and misconduct policies in place, as well as the overall code of conduct that governs behavior on campus. The University called for continued efforts to foster a culture of mutual respect and professionalism, where all members can thrive without fear of harassment or discrimination.
The disciplinary measures taken against Dr. Appiah come at a time when universities across the country have been grappling with the issue of sexual misconduct. This case, however, highlights the University of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to address this serious issue and send a strong message to both staff and students about the importance of maintaining a safe, harassment-free environment.
The University has also assured the public that it will continue to be vigilant in handling complaints related to sexual harassment. By upholding stringent policies and implementing effective disciplinary actions, the University aims to protect the rights and well-being of all those who are part of its academic community.
In closing, the University of Ghana reiterated its stance on the importance of maintaining high standards of ethics and integrity in all aspects of academic life. The institution remains committed to fostering an environment where respect, fairness, and equality are paramount, and where every member of the University community is held accountable for their actions.
