Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Black Stars, has urged Ghanaians to unite in support of the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government following the peaceful 2024 presidential election. Gyan’s call for national unity comes after John Dramani Mahama’s decisive victory, which saw him reclaim the presidency after eight years in opposition. The election results mark a significant political shift in the country, with Mahama’s return to power signaling a new phase for Ghana’s governance.

In a post on social media, Gyan congratulated the newly elected government and called on the public to focus on national progress rather than partisan interests. “Whenever there’s a situation, I always express my thoughts. Let’s support the government. Any government that takes power deserves our support,” Gyan wrote. He highlighted the importance of unity and emphasized that Ghanaians should not allow practices that harm the economy to persist. “If you buy goods for GHC 50 and sell them for GHC 1000, the country will suffer,” he pointed out, underlining the need for fair trade practices and responsible behavior to avoid unnecessary hardships.

Gyan continued by urging the people of Ghana to adopt a collaborative approach and put aside political differences for the greater good of the country. “Ghana has made its decision. Let’s set party politics aside. If your party has won, focus on supporting the government, and as citizens, we will also do our part,” he said. His call for unity is rooted in the belief that a shift in mindset is essential for the country’s development under the new administration.

The former Black Stars captain also emphasized that Ghanaians must alter their attitudes to ensure the country’s progress. “We need to change our attitudes and fully support the new government. Let’s congratulate the new government and show them the support they need to succeed. That is my message,” Gyan explained. He encouraged citizens to demonstrate loyalty to their country and its leaders, irrespective of party affiliation.

In his message, Gyan strongly discouraged any attempts to undermine the NDC government’s efforts. “As a good citizen of this country, my message is clear: let’s congratulate the NDC, the ruling party, and offer them our support, not sabotage them,” he stated. This call for unity is in stark contrast to the often divisive nature of politics, especially following a highly contested election.

Before the elections, Gyan had been actively involved with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where he served as the chairman of the Youth and Sports sub-committee for the party’s 2024 manifesto. He had also expressed a willingness to serve as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate, should the opportunity arise. However, in September 2024, Gyan distanced himself from partisan politics, explaining that his primary focus was now on philanthropy and youth development. “My main focus now is on humanitarian work and supporting the youth of Ghana,” he said in a public statement, emphasizing his commitment to giving back to the nation in a different capacity.

Despite stepping away from active involvement in politics, Gyan remains a highly respected figure in Ghanaian society, particularly for his achievements in football. As the country’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances for the national team, Gyan has earned a lasting legacy as one of the country’s greatest athletes. His influence extends beyond the football field, as he continues to serve as a role model and advocate for positive change in Ghana.

In his call for unity and support for the new government, Gyan highlighted the importance of coming together as a nation to address the challenges that lie ahead. He urged Ghanaians to set aside political differences and work together to support the new administration in its efforts to build a prosperous future for the country. By doing so, Gyan believes that Ghana can overcome its challenges and continue on the path of growth and development.

Ultimately, Gyan’s message is one of patriotism and collaboration, urging the Ghanaian public to embrace the spirit of unity and work together for the betterment of the nation. His call for support to the incoming NDC government reflects his belief that the country’s success lies in the collective efforts of all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation. As the nation moves forward under the leadership of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, Gyan’s message of national unity remains a powerful reminder of the importance of putting Ghana’s interests above all else.
