EC Awaits Results from Four Regions to Announce 2024 Presidential Election Winner

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that it is still waiting for final results from four regions in order to officially announce the winner of the 2024 presidential election. These regions include Greater Accra, Upper East, Savannah, and Ashanti.
Fred Tetteh, the Deputy Director of Research and Evaluation at the EC, provided an update on the progress of the results collation process on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the National Collation Centre at the EC’s headquarters in Accra. According to Tetteh, results from several regions had already been received and collated, including Ahafo, Central, Western North, Oti, Eastern, Upper West, Bono East, Volta, North East, Bono, Northern, and Western regions.
However, he clarified that the results from the Eastern Region were incomplete due to missing results from Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Suhum, and Akwatia constituencies, which were still pending.
Tetteh assured Ghanaians that the EC is working diligently to finalize the collation process and that the four remaining regions—Greater Accra, Upper East, Savannah, and Ashanti—are the only ones that still need to be completed. He explained that the EC was in the final stages of processing the regional results, and he assured the public that the Commission is doing its best to ensure the accuracy of the final outcome.
“We are currently wrapping up the process at the regional level, and we are within 32 to 35 hours since the polls closed on Saturday, December 7, 2024. We ask the public to be patient as we work to ensure that the results are accurate and exact,” Tetteh stated.
The 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections officially concluded on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Once the results from all regions are fully collated, the official declaration of the winner of the presidential election will be made by Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, who serves as the Returning Officer for the presidential race.
On Sunday, December 8, 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), publicly conceded defeat in the elections. This move is seen as a strong indication of Ghana’s robust democratic process and reflects the smooth transition of power despite political rivalry.
Dr. Bawumia’s concession was an acknowledgment of the will of the people, as indicated by the ongoing vote count. His gesture highlights the strength and maturity of Ghana’s democracy, where political opponents respect the electoral process and the outcome, even when results do not favor them.
As of now, the Electoral Commission is still diligently working to finalize the results, and once the missing results from the four regions are received, the official winner of the presidential race will be declared. The EC has also emphasized the importance of transparency and accuracy in its collation process, ensuring that the final results are based on the accurate compilation of data from all regions.
Ghanaians have been urged to remain patient as the Commission completes its task, with officials promising to release the final results as soon as the process is concluded. The delay in the final declaration is attributed to the meticulous nature of the electoral process, which involves careful verification and cross-checking of results from all regions to ensure the integrity of the election.
Once the Electoral Commission finalizes the results, Ghana will have its elected president, and the nation can move forward, ensuring that the democratic process remains a cornerstone of the country’s political system. In the meantime, the country remains hopeful for a smooth and peaceful transition, regardless of the election outcome.
