Mahama Confirms Receiving Congratulatory Call from Bawumia

John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has confirmed receiving a congratulatory call from his opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his victory in Ghana’s December 7 elections.
In a post on X on Sunday, December 8, 2024, Mahama stated, “I received a congratulatory call this morning from my brother, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, after my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election.”
At a press conference, Dr. Bawumia publicly conceded defeat, acknowledging Mahama’s lead and referring to him as Ghana’s President-elect. “I have just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Bawumia said. “The people of Ghana have made their choice; they have voted for change, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
Bawumia also explained that his early concession was intended to maintain peace and stability in the country. “My concession speech, made ahead of the official announcement by the Electoral Commission (EC), is to prevent any further tensions and preserve the peace of our nation,” he emphasized.
Moreover, Bawumia recognized the NDC’s success in the parliamentary elections, which has resulted in the party securing a majority in the next Parliament. “Former President Mahama and the NDC have won the presidential election decisively, and the NDC has also emerged victorious in the parliamentary election, although they are still awaiting the final collation,” he added.
At the time of writing, the Electoral Commission (EC) had yet to officially announce the results and declare the President-elect.
